Sources at the White House say that President Trump will deliver remarks on Monday that will ask Americans to trust him. The President will be making these comments at 9 PM EST to address the plan in Afghanistan and the escalating problems with South Asia.
Thanks to the White House announcement, we now know that the President is going to address the nation in a prime-time address “on the path forward for America’s engagement in Afghanistan and South Asia.”
During Trump’s campaign, he looked down at adding more money or troops to the Afghanistan conflict. In 2013, he tweeted that he agreed with former President Obama that we should withdraw our troops. In a second tweet, he stated that the country wasted too much blood and wealth in the country.
But now, it’s expected that Trump will add 4,000 troops to the existing 8,400 in Afghanistan. On a flight to Jordan, Defense Secretary James Mattis told reporters that Trump had made a decision on Afghanistan that would be coming soon. He also stated the following:
“I am very comfortable that the strategic process was sufficiently rigorous and did not go in with a pre-set position.”
The original statement by the White House also indicated that President Trump would be making an address on North Korea as well.
