Following an announcement by President Donald Trump that he would sign a bill that provided short term funding for the government that would last three weeks, Senator Lindsey Graham reacted, backing the president and saying that this was the best move.
“The best way to get this thing to a conclusion is to open up the government,” Graham told a reporter shortly after the announcement.
The South Carolina Republican then went on to talk about the special groups that Democrats have been bent on defending, such as the Dreamers and those with Temporary Protected Status.
“The bottom line is that the TPS recipients who have been here for decades as a result of natural disasters, wars, they are going to begin to lose their legal status this year. You have DACA folks that are in sort of legal limbo.
“The president is willing to give 1.1 million people a better life if he can get a secure border,” Graham said. “To my Democratic friends, you’ve voted in the past for wall funding greater than the president has requested.
“This is the first time in 12 years I’ve seen a deal where you secure your border and give a better life to the DACA TPS population.”
“If the Democrats do not work with us, the biggest losers are going to be the TPS DACA recipients, because this president will secure our border through executive action.”
Graham went on to say that if no compromise can be found during the three-week funded period before February 15, “the president will secure our border through executive action.”
“This needs to come to an end,” Graham said of the partisan disagreement and government shutdown. “Every commander-in-chief has an obligation to defend our country.”
Fox News reported that House Democratic Policy Committee Chairman David N. Cicilline of Rhode Island slammed Trump, saying “the American people don’t want the president’s big, dumb wall.”
