It seems that a political action committee (PAC) is already up and running for the midterms and the reelection of President Trump. They are offering a “Fight the Fake News” bumper sticker, echoing one of the president’s “go to” lines about the mainstream news.
“It’s up to us to get things done and drain the swamp in Washington. I have been listening to the REAL America, and I know you’re with me.” That is what is written on the pitch in a fundraising e-mail from the “Trump – Make America Great Again Committee. It concludes with this charge: “The Fake News Media is the real opposition.” You can buy the bumper sticker from the PAC for a donation that starts with $1.00.
Trump’s mantra about the news media as dishonest, fake news and the opposition party has increased a lack of trust for the mainstream news. A July NPR/PBS Newshour/Marist poll shows that 91 percent of Republicans and 93 percent of Trump supporters don’t trust the media.
Trump’s most recent tweets about the fury around his dinner meeting with Putin at the G-20 summit continues his rant against the press: “Fake News story of secret dinner with Putin is ‘sick.’ All G 20 leaders, and spouses, were invited by the Chancellor of Germany. Press knew!” He then tweeted just 7 minutes later, “The Fake News is becoming more and more dishonest! Even a dinner arranged for top 20 leaders in Germany is made to look sinister!”
But this is not just a Republican dilemma. The survey from the Media Insight Project reveals that only 31 percent of Democrats said they trust the news to be “very accurate.”
Are you ready to get your “Fake News” bumper sticker? Are you ready to begin the midterm hoopla?
