President Trump will certainly have his work cut out for him when he meets with other world leaders at the upcoming G-20 Summit this July in Hamburg, Germany. Considering that many Europeans are preparing a unified response to several of Trump’s decisions and policies, there will no doubt be mass fervor when he enters Germany. And many of our closest allies are irritated with the president.
The host, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, is one of them. In fact, Merkel had some words for Trump in preparation for the meeting. She addressed Trump’s position on climate change and trade in a very aggressive speech in front of the German parliament. You can watch some of her speech in the video below.
Merkel predicted that the meeting is going to be very hard, but she added that she is “determined to send a signal.” The Chancellor’s speech did not mention Trump by name, but it was painfully clear who she was speaking about. She stated that she has been in contact with other European leaders and they are preparing to show a united front against President Trump on many important issues.
Merkel declared: ”The European Union unconditionally stands by its agreement in Paris and will implement it. Since the U.S. decision to leave the Paris climate agreement, we are more determined than ever to make it a success. We want to tackle this existential challenge and we can’t and won’t wait until the last person on earth is convinced of the scientific basis for climate change. The discord is obvious, and it would be dishonest to paper over the conflict.”
The Chancellor told her parliament and legislators: “Anyone who believes the problems of this world can be solved with isolationism and protectionism is making a huge mistake.”
When Trump and Merkel met before, the press noted that Trump did not shake her hand and it seemed that he refused to make eye contact with her. He is probably going to have to face her this time; she is making it very clear that she has a signal to send.
What do you think about Merkel’s tough stand?
