CNN allegedly threatened a Reddit user on Tuesday with the threat of revealing their identity to the online world. The user has come under fire for taking credit for a spoof wrestling video of President Trump taking down a CNN logo. While he had no intention of it being racist, bigoted, or anything else, many people are crazy enough to try and hurt him for the simple video.
The cable network has pushed back from statements from Donald Trump Jr. and others saying the user was not a 15-year-old but would not publish for safety reasons:
“CNN decided not to publish the name of the Reddit user out of concern for his safety. Any assertion that the network blackmailed or coerced him is false. The user, who is an adult male, not a 15-year-old boy, apologized and deleted his account before ever speaking with our reporter.”
CNN released an original story reporting the following:
“CNN is not publishing “HanA**holeSolo’s” name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.”
They continued with the hint of a threat saying:
“CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.”
That last statement specifically seems like coercion. Releasing this man’s name could result in death threats, job risks, safety concerns of all kinds and more. The spokesman declared that CNN did not make a “deal” with the meme creator, and said the statement was designed to state there was no deal:
“CNN never made any deal, of any kind, with the user. In fact, CNN included its decision to withhold the user’s identity in an effort to be completely transparent that there was no deal.”
Andrew Kaczynski reported the story and allegedly received a call from the unidentified Reddit user. The user apparently said he was in “total agreement” and wasn’t “threatened in anyway.”
The irony in the entire thing is that these types of companies choose to support a theater performance that assassinates a look-a-like president, but then condemns a mock wrestling video with an added logo…
