This past Monday, President Donald Trump spoke at the Boy Scouts of America Jamboree. This Jamboree is held every four years and is a massive gathering that represents the 107-year-old organization, its values, and what it stands for.
Over 45,000 boy scouts in the crowd, ranging in ages 12-18, packed in to hear from the president. He began the speech by saying, “Who the hell wants to speak about politics?” He then went on for another 35 minutes, leaving a number parents sick to their stomach.
He did, in fact, talk quite a lot about politics. He talked about how our previous president, Barrack Obama, never visited a Jamboree while he was in office. Obama was, however, a boy scout, unlike Trump.
The following is video of Trump taking a jab at Obama…
So much for leaving politics out of it.
Trump went on about the “cesspool” of politics in Washington, the future of healthcare, and a plethora of other political topics. Check out the following video for a recap…
Parents, lobbyists, and politicians took to social media to express their displeasure with Trump’s behavior during his speech.
One mother said, “I am the proud mother of a former scout who was sheltered from that pack of lies speech at the Jamboree. Done with scouts after you felt the need to have my kid listen to a liar stroke his ego on our time.”
Pete Souza, former chief official White House photographer, took to Instagram. He posted a photo of Barrack Obama embracing a scout.
Amy Siskind, a lobbyist for women’s and LGBT rights, tweeted, “If the Boy Scouts organization has any decency, they’ll come out with a statement tonight denouncing Trump, and giving instructions for all troop leaders to speak to these boys about what they just heard and why it was wrong.”
In response to the criticism, The Boy Scouts of America said that their invitation of Trump to speak was a “long-standing tradition and is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies”
They went on and reported that they are “wholly non-partisan and do not promote any one position, product, service, political candidate or philosophy.”
There were, however, many people that took to twitter to express their excitement and appreciation for the president and his speech.
After a night filled with cheers, boos, and chants, it is safe to say this was a perfect example of modern-day politics. Some people were deeply offended, others were ecstatic. There will always be winners and losers in the world of politics.
