On Thursday, President Trump followed through on what was a repeated promise during his campaign; the United States will withdraw from the global pact to fight climate change. During the campaign, Trump criticized the Paris Agreement, at one point he called climate change a “hoax” that was aimed at weakening industry in the United States.
CNN’s host of “Fareed Zakaria GPS” appeared on the network just before President Trump made his announcement for withdrawal in the Rose Garden. Zakaria spoke with Jake Tapper and began his discussion by saying that if the president followed through with this decision, “This will be the day that the United States resigned as the leader of the free world.” The CNN host continued to say that the “irresponsibility” of Trump withdrawing from the pact was “breathtaking because the Paris Climate Accord was extraordinarily flexible.” Zakaria said that the agreement did not dilute American sovereignty. He said, “They allow every country to make its own plans. That’s why countries that jealously guarded their sovereignty like China, like India, like Russia have all signed on.”
Susan Biniaz, the former State Department lawyer on climate change issues, had the same sentiment. She told the Huffington Post on Thursday that “It’s inexplicable why we would be leaving. We negotiated it largely to U.S. specifications.”
What do you think President Trump’s primary reason for exiting from this agreement is?
