CNN has rewritten their publishing guidelines after the network had to retract a story this weekend which tied President Trump’s team to the ongoing Senate investigation into Russia’s 2016 election interference. Buzzfeed discovered an internal memo from CNNMoney executive editor Rich Barbieri which stated “no one should publish any content involving Russia” without consulting him or CNN vice president Jason Farkas.
The memo continued, “This applies to social, video, editorial, and MoneyStream. No exceptions,” the email also stated. “I will lay out a workflow Monday.”
CNN is reacting after they had to retract a story that connected Trump campaign advisor Anthony Scaramucci to a $10 billion Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF). The network apologized to Scaramucci, and they also relayed that the story did not meet their editorial standards.
Buzzfeed also reported that CNN chief Jeff Zucker is personally leading the network’s internal investigation on how this story went to publication. Buzzfeed’s source described the development as a “massive, massive f*ck up and people will be disciplined.”
