Despite what their mayor said, the New York Police Department has been cooperating with immigration and customs enforcement.
Mayor Bill de Blasio recently promised that New York would keep their sanctuary policy. However, New York Daily News reported that NYPD has been alerting Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to illegal immigrants who have criminal court appearances.
These actions go directly against Mayor Bill de Blasio’s new law which reduces the city’s cooperation with ICE. According to Breitbart, the law stops “law enforcement from honoring ICE detainer request – except for those convicted of “violent of serious crimes.”
But according to Breitbart, if an illegal immigrant is facing deportation, NYPD will turn them over to ICE. One example of this would be David Gonzalez. Despite being deported once, he re-entered the States and was eventually charged with “rubbing against a woman.”
Instead of complying with ICE to detain Gonzalez, NYPD simply “notified ICE” of the arrest and where he would be released after the Judge released him. NYPD’s actions have caused some unrest among those who believe New York City should remain a sanctuary city. Co-founder and deputy director of Queens Law Associates, Lori Zeno, is one of those who disagrees with NYPD. Zeno has been reported saying:
“I think it really is outrageous. We’re supposed to be a sanctuary city … Cooperating with ICE is one thing … But to me they seem to be in collusion with ICE.”
The spokesman for Mayor de Blasio, Austin Finan, released a statement that did anything but deny NYPD’s actions:
“NYPD notifies and confirms with all inquiring and arresting agencies the status of an arrestee who may be the subject of a warrant.”
