Joe Cunningham is a Democrat, and he is running to try and unseat Rep. Mark Sanford (R-S.C.) and today released a statement that turned some heads inside the ranks….
On Wednesday the day after John Osseff lost the special election in Georgia Joe Cunningham a Democrat looking to flip Mark Sanford’s seat said:
The post seemed to coincide with an interview he gave to the Charleston newspaper “The Post and Courier, shakeup” and they reported:
Cunningham, a Charleston-based construction law attorney, launched his bid to represent South Carolina’s 1st District on Wednesday, vow to shake up Washington in the Trump era and oust Sanford, a former governor who has served in the House since 2013.
“We can’t keep sending the same politicians who have been there, decade after decade, to fix the problems they created in the first place,”
But Cunningham’s House bid is likely a longshot. South Carolina’s 1st district has been held by Republicans for nearly 40 years, and Democrat Hillary Clinton took only 40 percent of the vote there in the 2016 presidential race, according to Daily Kos.
The Cook Political Report, which tracks and analyzes campaign outlooks, does not include Sanford’s district on their list of competitive House races.
Rep. Mark Sanford’s seat would be incredibly difficult to flip which may be why Mr. Cunningham posted such an inflammatory statement. Do you think he might right regardless if he can flip the seat?
