President Trump officially kicked off the White House Easter Roll along a side of his family and several lucky children. Trump began the 139-year-old tradition praising the children for their competitive spirit.
Despite a dreary morning, the President, first lady, and son, Barron, emerged onto the White House balcony to greet those in attendance. The White House Easter Roll is known to be one of the hardest events for the White House staff to put on. But despite the chaos of organization, President Trump found himself outside encouraging the families and kids:
“We will be stronger and bigger and better as a nation than ever before, and we are right on track. I’ve seen those kids, and they’re highly, highly competitive.”
President Trump went on to congratulate his wife, who “[has] been working on this for a long time, to make it perfect.” Melania Trump currently lives in New York with Barron Trump which gives her limited staff. This, along with a late start, caused numerous problems executing the Egg Roll. This year alone, the Egg Roll was cut down to 21,000 attendees from 35,000.
Because of the late planning, vendors and participants wondered if the event would even happen. Typically, you’d see A-list celebrities and tons of costumed characters, but this year was sparse in both. Mrs. Trump did include a few musical acts and military band, but what they lacked in activity, they made up for in hospitality.
The First Family enjoyed the dreary day seated with children making greeting cards for United States troops and interacting with their guests. Mrs. Trump read a book called, “Party Animals” which focuses on the uniqueness of different animals instead of focusing on their bad qualities. They couple also officiated the actual Easter Egg Roll which they started with a blow of a whistle.
Although many hoped that Sean Spicer would again wear the bunny outfit that he wore during George W. Bush’s administration, he opted for a fun tie instead. The event went off without a hitch, and we’re sure the following year will be so much better!
