President Trump’s agenda was clearly “America First.” He had stated that we would not be the world’s police. So many were somewhat taken aback by the quick and decisive move to spray the Syrian airfield with 59 Tomahawk missiles this past week. Eric Trump, the president’s 33-year-old son, indicated to a British newspaper that Donald Trump’s decision was influenced by his sister, Ivanka Trump Kushner. Eric said that she was, like many, “heartbroken and outraged” at Assad’s alleged chemical weapons attack that killed many civilians including women and children.
Eric Trump told The Daily Telegraph on Monday that the strike was influenced in part by Ivanka. “Ivanka is a mother of three kids and she has influence,” Eric Trump said, speaking with the newspaper at Trump Turnberry Golf Resort in Ayrshire, Scotland. “I’m sure she said, ‘Listen, this is horrible stuff.’ My father will act in times like that.”
Eric also relayed how “deeply affected” his father was by the pictures of children being “sprayed down by hoses to keep their skin from burning.” He continued, “It was horrible. These guys are savages, and I’m glad he responded the way he responded.” The younger Trump described his father as a “great thinker, practical, not impulsive.” He said, “I’m proud he took that action, and believe me he thinks things through.”
When The Telegraph asked Eric about Russia’s threats concerning military escalation following the strike, he said that his father would not be intimidated. “There will be no one harder — he has got more backbone than anybody,” he said. “He is not a guy who gets intimidated. I can tell you he is tough and he won’t be pushed around. The cards will shake out the way they do, but he’s tough.”
Eric Trump continued to describe how “deeply committed” his father is to building America’s military strength and said that he was a “big believer in Ronald Reagan’s philosophy of achieving peace through strength.” Eric addressed the idea that the Trump team has been in collusion with Russia by saying that his father only ever argued that the U.S. should be “best friends with other superpowers.” He described allegations of improper relations with Russia as “ridiculous.” “If there was anything that [the strike on] Syria did, it was to validate the fact that there is no Russia tie,” he said.
Eric finished his remarks on the chemical weapon atrocity in Syria by saying, “…at some point America is the global leader, and the world’s superpower has to come forward and act, and they did with a lot of support of our allies, and I think that’s a great thing.”
What do you think about Eric Trump’s statement that Ivanka influenced the president’s decision? What do you think about Eric’s defense of his father?
