The press might need to shift their focus back to the Democratic National Committee and its former chairwoman, Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Imran Awan, the Pakistani IT vendor of Debbie Wasserman Schultz, was arrested by the FBI while trying to flee the country Tuesday, according to a Fox News reporter.
Fox News Capitol Hill reporter Chad Pergram tweeted about the arrest that took place at Dulles International Airport. Mr. Awan is being charged with “bank fraud.” Wasserman apparently responded to the news of the charges and arrest by firing Mr. Awan.
According to the investigative unit of the Daily Caller News Foundation, it was reported that Imran Awan and other members of his family were under investigation by both the FBI and Capitol Police for “serious, potentially illegal, violations on the House IT network.” The Awan family rented out their house in the Washington, DC area and then departed. It was discovered that they left “smashed computer hard-drives” and other computer equipment at their home. The Awan family tried to retrieve them, even threatening to sue the renters, before they were seized by investigators.
However, there is more the brothers were barred from the Capitol building after it was discovered that there were computer breaches, the Daily Caller reports:
Brothers Abid, Imran, and Jamal Awan were barred from computer networks at the House of Representatives Thursday, The Daily Caller News Foundation Investigative Group has learned.
Three members of the intelligence panel and five members of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs were among the dozens of members who employed the suspects on a shared basis. The two committees deal with many of the nation’s most sensitive issues and documents, including those related to the war on terrorism.
Also among those whose computer systems may have been compromised is Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz, the Florida Democrat who was previously the target of a disastrous email hack when she served as chairman of the Democratic National Committee during the 2016 campaign.
The brothers are suspected of serious violations, including accessing members’ computer networks without their knowledge and stealing equipment from Congress.
Jamal handled IT for Rep. Joaquin Castro, a Texas Democrat who serves on both the intelligence and foreign affairs panels.
“As of 2/2, his employment with our office has been terminated,” Castro spokeswoman Erin Hatch told TheDCNF Friday.
Jamal also worked for Louisiana Democrat Rep. Cedric Richmond, who is on the Committee on Homeland Security.
Imran worked for Reps. Andre Carson, an Indiana Democrat, and Jackie Speier, a California Democrat. Both are members of the intelligence committee, and their spokesmen did not respond to TheDCNF’s requests for comment. Imran also worked for the House office of Wasserman Schultz.
The contents of the hard drives are unclear, but Imran Awan and his brothers are reported to have provided services as IT vendors for a number House Democrats.
According to Chad Pergram, the main criminal violation may have involved embezzling IT budget money from Democratic leaders. In an earlier investigation, it appeared to show that Debbie Wasserman Schultz prepared to go to bat for Awan’s behalf, which raised questions about the computer equipment. She even threatened Capitol Police Chief Matthew R. Verderosa, asking him to return a seized laptop to her. It has been reported that Shultz threatened to use her position on the Committee that sets the
Capitol Police budget to force police to turn over the laptop.
At this time NO ONE is insinuating that Shutlz in any way assisted her former staff members in any type of computer hack. However, people are raising an eyebrow to her treatment of Capitol Police and if she possibly hindered a active investigation.
This arrest and investigation may add further insight into possible violations coming from the Democratic National Committee. Do you think this will prove to be damaging for Democratic leadership?
