Before President Trump, the majority of the left seemed to hate former President George W. Bush. However, a recent statement made by the former president has many cheering him on. In a statement on Monday, Bush announced that media is an essential part of democracy.
In an interview with NBC’s “Today” he said:
“I consider the media to be indispensable to democracy. … Power can be very addictive.”
The statement from the former president comes just days after the multiple news outlets were blocked from a question-and-answer briefing at the White House. Regardless of that block, the Trump administration and the media have been at odds for quite a while.
President Trump has taken a very strong stance against media, but primarily against “fake news.” During his recent visit to the Conservative Political Action Conference, President Trump went after multiple press members saying:
“I called the fake news the enemy of the people … They are the enemy of the people, because they have no sources. They just make them up when there are none.”
However, Bush did conclude his statement on Monday suggesting that the press should be independent. “We need an independent media to hold people like me to account,” he said. Having an independent news outlet could do wonders for changing this issue and would create more wealth and jobs.
