Former Speaker Newt Gingrich just spoke with “Fox and Friends” about the Georgia special election for a House seat that he once served. Gingrich agreed in part with what Democrats were saying about the election before they lost: It was a referendum on President Trump.
“The news media had it right,” Gingrich said. “This was a referendum on Trump. He won. The problem for the news media is they can’t come to grips with the fact that in five different specials the Republicans have won.” He added: “And that sort of says, maybe Trump’s doing a lot better in America than he is in the news media.”
Gingrich made these comments after Republican Karen Handel won the Georgia special House election runoff Tuesday night. The victory dealt a major blow to Democrats who were hoping to create a template for wins in the 2018 midterm elections. Trump took aim at the Democrats in a rally speech in Iowa on Wednesday saying that the media was clueless about Republican victories. “The truth is, people, love us … they haven’t figured it out yet,” Trump said. He also boasted that the GOP is 5-0 for special election victories.
