President Trump is not the only one firing with both barrels at the news media. Former Speaker of the House, Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), claimed Tuesday during an interview with Politico that “the damage the news media is doing to the United States is despicable.” He called for the White House to shutter the White House press briefing room. “I am personally offended by the American news media,” Gingrich told a news source. “I think it is destructive and disgusting. It is a danger to the country right now.”
In another interview, Gingrich reiterated his call for the president to close down the White House press briefing room. He suggested that the American people themselves question Sean Spicer, the White House Press Secretary. He added that shuttering the press briefing room would show that “the media is a corrupt institution and [Trump] is tired of being harassed by people whose only interest is making him look bad.”
President Trump has also suggested that he might cancel all future press briefings following the controversy over his administration’s shifting storyline regarding Trump’s firing of FBI Director James Comey. The White House kept the narrative that President Trump made the decision after the recommendation from the Justice Department. Trump said in an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt that he was going to fire Comey regardless of the advice. “As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with perfect accuracy!” Trump tweeted. “Maybe the best thing to do would be to cancel all future ‘press briefings’ and hand out written responses for the sake of accuracy???”
Trump later said in an interview with Fox News that he might perform the press briefings himself every two weeks. “We don’t have press conferences, we just don’t have them, unless I have them every two weeks and I do them myself,” he said. “I think it’s a good idea.”
What do you think about what Gingrich has said? Do you think that the media is a “danger to the country right now?” Do you think that President Trump ought to halt daily press briefings?
