GOP establishment turns on Trump for punishing Mexico

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, a Republican of Iowa, called out President Donald Trump for what Grassley defined as a “misuse” of presidential tariff authority for the new restraints that the president is threatening to put on Mexico, according to The Hill.

Grassley’s comments came Thursday evening as he cautioned that the most recent presidential move could threaten the United States- Mexico-Canada Agreement.

“Trade policy and border security are separate issues. This is a misuse of presidential tariff authority and counter to congressional intent,” Grassley said in a statement according to The Hill.

Trump announced on Thursday that he would impose the tariffs to put pressure on Mexico to stop the flow of migrants into the U.S. at the southern border.

“On June 10th, the United States will impose a 5% Tariff on all goods coming into our Country from Mexico, until such time as illegal migrants coming through Mexico, and into our Country, STOP. The Tariff will gradually increase until the Illegal Immigration problem is remedied,” he tweeted late Thursday.

According to the official White House statement, the president the tariff will increase by 5 percent every month until it reaches 25 percent, unless and until Mexico substantially stops the illegal inflow of aliens coming through its territory.”

Grassley went on to say that if the tariff is enacted it threat “would seriously jeopardize passage of USMCA,” which is the Trump administration’s revision of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).

“I support nearly every one of President Trump’s immigration policies, but this is not one of them,” he added.

While lawmakers appear to be skeptical of the president’s decision, Trump went on to defend his actions on Twitter Friday morning, outlining the negative effects that our neighbors to the south have on the United States.

“90% of the Drugs coming into the United States come through Mexico & our Southern Border,” Trump tweeted on Friday. “80,000 people died last year, 1,000,000 people ruined. This has gone on for many years & nothing has been done about it. We have a 100 Billion Dollar Trade Deficit with Mexico. It’s time!”
