Donald Trump Jr. is under fire again for recent statements that revealed he did meet with a Russian lawyer who promised they had damning evidence on Hillary Clinton. The recent information has led Sen. Susan Collins to call for the Senate Intelligence Committee to interview Trump Jr.
Collins also sits on the Senate Intelligence Committee and told reporters that “our intelligence committee needs to interview him and others who attended the meeting.” Steven Dennis then released the following Tweet confirming Collins’ remarks. Steven Dennis is a reporter for Bloomberg and from his tweet, I think we can assume he is non-biased (sarcasm).
According to The New York Times, President Trump’s son held a meeting with Russian lawyer Natalia Veselnitskaya because she promised she had damaging information on Ms. Clinton. Accompanying Trump’s son was Trump’s campaign chairman Paul Manafort and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.
The White House has dismissed the meeting several times saying there wasn’t anything wrong with the president’s son going to the meeting. The issue that both sides of the aisle have is that Trump Jr. met with a lawyer who held close ties to the Kremlin.
According to The Hill, “the reports come amid probes being carried out both by the Justice Department and several congressional panels that are looking into whether Trump campaign aides colluded with the Russians.” Naturally, the Russians have denied knowing of the meeting and knowing Veselnitskaya.
Trump Jr. said that the meeting quickly turned to American adoptions of Russian children – an issue with which Veselnitskaya has long been involved. Trump made the following statement regarding this:
“Her statements were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. No details or supporting information was provided or even offered. It quickly became clear that she had no meaningful information.”
In the meantime, Sen. James Lankford, who also sits on the Senate Intelligence panel, told NPR that they are still “walking through the details” of the meeting.
