Gov. Andrew Cuomo just aligned himself with both Trump and Sessions regarding the MS-13 gangs on Long Island. Cuomo announced just two days before U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions visit, that a new State Police gang Taskforce would target the violence-plagued area known as Central Islip.
“There is a current scourge that is going on across the country, going on across the world,” Cuomo said. “We have it in other parts of the state but nowhere like on Long Island.”
“They are a network that has created horrendous crimes,” he continued. “Their currency is fear and intimidation, and they are getting more outrageous and more obnoxious in their activities.”
When Jeff Sessions visits later this week, he will focus on gangs in his speech on Long Island. This is just a week after President Trump’s administration announced that it would concentrate on the crime network spreading through America. Trump tweeted previously, “The weak illegal immigration policies of the Obama Admin. allowed bad MS 13 gangs to form in cities across U.S. We are removing them fast!”
Gov. Cuomo made a stop in Brentwood on Wednesday to say that New York has no tolerance for MS-13. “Sometimes the issues we deal with are nuanced and subtle,” he said. “Sometimes the truth is in the gray. That is not true in this situation. MS-13 are thugs.”
MS-13 preys on young people, they recruit unaccompanied children from Central America and seduce them into a life of gang violence. “They involve themselves in robbery, prostitution, drugs, grand larceny, kidnapping,” Cuomo said. “Their calling card is fear and intimidation and they prey on the working families of Brentwood and Central Islip.”
The new Taskforce will consist of 25 law enforcement officers from the State Police. They will bring intelligence expertise, state of the art electronic surveillance equipment, vehicles, aviation equipment, and more to battle gang violence in New York. They will specifically target MS-13 on Long Island, according to the governor.
“We will not rest until MS-13 is put out of business because we have zero tolerance in this state for the thuggery that MS-13 has made their calling card,” Cuomo said.
