Government shutdown officially backfires on Nancy Pelosi

Following House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s letter rescinding her offer to President Donald Trump to issue his State of the Union address, President Donald Trump and his administration officials have rescinded an offer of their own: to shuttle the speaker on a multi-country political tour.

Just one day after Pelosi’s letter to the White House, in which she cited security concerns, due to a lack of payment for certain Secret Service and other security officials for her concern over the event, President Donald Trump sent his own letter to, “The Honorable Nancy Pelosi.”

The letter was tweeted by White House press secretary Sarah Sanders:

“President @realDonaldTrump’s letter to @SpeakerPelosi concerning her upcoming travel,” Sanders tweeted.

“Dear Madame Speaker:

“Due to the Shutdown, I am sorry to inform you that your trip to Brussels, Egypt, and Afghanistan has been postponed. We will reschedule this seven-day excursion when the Shutdown is over.

“In Light of the 800,000 great American workers not receiving pay, I am sure you would agree that postponing this public relations event is totally appropriate. I also feel that, during this period, it would be better if you were in Washington negotiating with me and joining the Strong Border Security movement to end the Shutdown.

“Obviously, if you would like to make your journey by flying commercial, that would certainly be your prerogative.

“I look forward to seeing you soon and even more forward to watching your open and dangerous southern border finally receive the attention, funding and security it so desperately deserves!”

The letter was signed by the president and dated January 17, 2019.

The president has consistently called out Democrats for both blaming Republicans for the government shutdown and the employees out of work, and simultaneously, leaving town without coming to an agreement.

“I’ve been waiting all weekend. Democrats must get to work now. Border must be secured!” Trump tweeted on Monday

“Dems in Puerto Rico as Shutdown hits day 24,” he said, moments later.
