What Happened To the NAACP Leader Who Self ID’d As Black Is Really Sad

Rachel Dolezal was a NAACP chapter leader in Spokane, Washington who resigned after it was discovered that she was pretending to be black. It was learned over the weekend that Dolezal is on food stamps and may be homeless because she can’t find a job.

Dolezal gave an interview with the Guardian and said she has applied for over “100 jobs” however, has only been contacted to do reality tv or pornography.

“Right now the only place that I feel understood and completely accepted is with my kids and my sister,”

In 2015 Dolezal was thrust into headlines after it was discovered that Dolezal is white, not black like she claimed. The NAACP has white leaders, however, was under pressure from critics because she is white and presenting herself as black.

“I feel like the idea of being trans-black would be much more accurate than ‘I’m white’. Because you know, I’m not white, “There’s a perspective, there’s a mentality, there’s a culture,” she said. “To say that I’m black is to say, this is how I see the world, this is the philosophy, the history, this is what I love and what I honor. Calling myself black feels more accurate than saying I’m white.”

Since resigning Dolezal has been unable to find work and living with her sister. This is the first nationally known case of a someone stating they are “Trans-Racial.” As groups push for Americans to be more accepting it will be interesting to see how issues like this will be handled in the future. I hope things work out for Ms. Dolezal, I’m sure she’s learned a valuable lesson.
