On Tuesday the Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer sent a stern warning to the President about the current Attorney General Jeff Sessions.
“Let me state for the record now, before this scheme gains wings; Democrats will never go along with the recess appointment if that situation arises,”
Sen. Schumer informed the President that they “have some tools in our toolbox” to block any Trump recess appointment. Schumer continued:
We’re ready to use every single one of them, anytime, day or night. It’s so vital to the future of the republic,”
One of those tools is that the Democrats could withhold the Senate from taking their mid-August break and force the Republicans to set up “pro-forma” hearing. “Pro-Forma” hearing would be established to try and block the President from appointing anyone without Senate confirmation approval.
The Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said that he has no notice of any pro-forma hearings and they only last a few minutes. McConnell’s spokesperson said, “if the Senate doesn’t adjourn, typically pro forma sessions happen every three days.”
Schumer’s concern is that Trump is trying to “bully” Sessions out of office. “I cannot imagine my friends on the Republican side, and particularly in the Republican leadership … would be complicit in creating a constitutional crisis.”
It seems like even the Democrats are concerned about what the President might do and who could be the next Attorney General. Rumors swirled today that Senator Ted Cruz could be appointed in the event Sessions is removed or resigns.
Whatever happens, it appears Schumer wants to let Trump know to tread carefully.
