Despite what many are saying, the U.S.-Mexico border has experienced a massive drop in illegal immigration during President Trump’s administration. The Former border commissioner told Congress that illegal immigration dropped 67 percent since last year.
During testimony to the Senate Homeland Security Committee David V. Aguilar, former chief of border protection said: “This is over 20 percent greater than February’s report. “It’s actually up to 67 percent drop compared to last year.” When asked for confirmation, Customs and Border Protection didn’t release any information right away. Rather, the agency has been distributing information each month. The March details, however, have not been released yet.
But even if the 67 percent was off by 10, it would still be a drastic accomplishment considering how short Trump has been in office. According to The Washington Times, this isn’t the first time immigration numbers have dropped:
“Mr. Aguilar said these kinds of drops have occurred before, during the Reagan administration, after Congress passed a broad amnesty granting legal status to millions of illegal immigrants, and promised to get tough on enforcement.”
The legalization happened, but the enforcement was lacking. Illegal immigration exploded in the following 20 years. Up to now, it was expected we would just have illegal immigrants everywhere, but thanks to President Trump’s aggressive push, we see a change.
What do you think about this change? Do you think we need to keep our borders open?
