It’s official. President Obama is now a lame duck. But what will he do during his last months in office?
The Washington Times reported Tuesday that Americans should expect Obama to engage in a series of actions designed to ensure his legacy and leave a lasting impact on the country. These actions could include more executive orders and many pardons.
Lame duck presidents have historically behaved a bit differently than at other times during their presidencies. Perhaps this is due to the fact that they can take the political heat at a new level with no more elections in their future or perhaps it is because they see one last chance to ensure their legacies.
“As President Obama runs out the clock on his eight-year tenure, analysts say, he still has plenty of business left undone, and they expect him to follow the lead of other presidents and issue a series of rules, to add to his list of executive orders, to continue his record-setting pace of commutations and perhaps add a controversial pardon or two into the mix.”
Republican lobbyist Michael McKenna hypothesizes that Obama may issue pardons for both former Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-NY, and his estranged wife, Clinton aide Huma Abedin. American Action Forum’s Sam Batkins, the director of regulatory policy, notes that executive orders are expected in a number of areas including renewable fuels and methane and governance of smart cars through the regulation of vehicle communications and fuel efficiency.
Obama has proven in the past that he is willing to assert his executive privileges to accomplish his agenda in the past. Most notably, following the Republican takeover of the House of Representatives in 2011, Obama saw much of his agenda come to a halt in Congress. His solution was to wield his pen to accomplish his goals through a series of controversial executive orders, recess appointments and department policies and regulations
Many of the president’s unilateral actions have come under fire. Obama’s controversial 2014 attempt to provide amnesty to more than four million illegal immigrants was halted after a federal courts weighed in declaring that Obama’s actions violated immigration law.
With just over two months left in office, Obama will no doubt be looking to firm up his legacy and leave an impact. Let’s hope that justice is not averted at the same time.
