House Democrats are taking on Trump and are refusing to back down. After the dust-up between President Elect Trump and Rep. John Lewis a growing number of lawmakers are stating they will not attend the inauguration ceremony.
****UPDATE 03:30PM Count of Democratic Lawmakers is now up to 53****
The Washington Post reported that:
“Here are now more than 40 House Democrats — 44, at last count — who have declared that they will not attend the inauguration on Capitol Hill this week. The number rose sharply after Trump tweeted Saturday that Lewis is “all talk, talk, talk” and should “finally focus on the burning and crime infested inner cities.”
Lewis, who sees Trump’s Nov. 8 win as illegitimate because of Russia’s alleged interference in the election, is best known for leading civil rights protests in the 1960s, including the 1965 march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., in which state troopers brutally attacked the crowd. Lewis will not attend the inauguration, he told NBC News in an interview for Sunday’s “Meet the Press.”
Many of the 44 Democrats that decided not to attend the ceremony cited it was because of Mr. Trump’s attack on Rep. John Lewis. Democratic lawmakers that have chosen not to attend reported that they will remain with the people of their district, one lawmaker will join a women’s Anti-Trump protest.
Mr. Trump has repeatedly stated that he wishes to bridge a gap with the African American community. However, attacking a civil rights leader such as John Lewis seems to have only widened that gap. The incoming President must remember that actions are louder than words and attacking an African American icon such as John Lewis is no way to start.
