It seems like there are always more significant “scandals” to report than Donald Trump’s secret tax returns. In fact, most people appear to have just accepted that the public will never see the president’s tax history. Trump has said that he would release them as every other presidential nominee has done since Watergate, but for some reason, they have not seen the light of day.
There are a few congressional Democrats who have remained fervent on this issue. This was just reported Thursday night by NJ.com:
Rep. Bill Pascrell Jr. tried once again Thursday to force President Donald Trump to release his income tax returns. And once again walked away empty-handed.
The Republican majority on the House Ways and Means Committee turned down Pascrell’s latest motion, as it has his previous attempts to force the president to follow a 40-year precedent and release his financial information.
Rep. Pascrell issued a demand for both Trump’s personal and business returns. He argued, “How can we debate tax reform proposals without seeing the president’s tax returns? […] Congress has the authority and the duty to obtain and review President Trump’s tax returns to ensure there are no potential conflicts of interest in the tax policies he is proposing.”
The representative’s demand was not met. The Ways and Means Committee voted 21 to 14 to reject the New Jersey Democrat’s motion. If it had passed, the Treasury Department would have been asked to provide the documents to Congress. There were 0 Republicans who broke ranks and voted for Pascrell’s measure. The Committee only considered the Democrat’s proposal because if they didn’t, Pascrell and his allies could have forced the issue onto the House floor. This would have created a very public vote for concerned Republicans.
So 21 Republicans took the heat instead of forcing 10 times that many in the house. But either way, the bottom line is this: The GOP is still keeping the president’s tax returns hidden, even from Congress.
This is against the current of public sentiment. A White House petition on the “We the People” website produced 1 million signatures requesting that Trump release his returns. This was the most successful petition in the history of the online project. There has been no response from the Trump team on the historic appeal.
It’s no longer headline news…but some are still very interested. Are you?
