This Isn’t Poland Anymore: Melania Trump’s Life Threatened In Germany

Melania Trump was unable to leave her residence in Hamburg, Germany today because of security concerns over the increasingly violent protests outside of the G-20 summit, the White House said. The protests have raged throughout the northern Germany city while the leaders of the world’s major economies gathered to meet.
On Friday morning, the Hamburg police refused to clear the first lady from leaving her residence, Stephanie Grisham, communications director for the first lady said. Grisham relayed, “It’s unfortunate.”

The clashes broke out near the summit on Thursday with German riot police confronting thousands of protestors that had taken to the streets when President Trump arrived. There may have been nearly 10,000 people belonging to anti-Trump and anti-capitalist groups, many of them wearing masks, who stormed the streets in a protest they called, “Welcome to Hell.” Protestors not only attacked authorities, but set fires, hurled rocks and chanted slogans while holding angry banners. The riot police retaliated by launching tear gas, smoke bombs and water cannons. At least 15 Hamburg police officers were injured by the unruly mob. After the authorities gained control of the protestors, there was an eery backdrop of smoke and gas for the G-20 summit.
Melania Trump had been scheduled to join on a tour of the German Climate Computer Center with the husband of German Chancellor Angela Merkel. It is unknown just how long the first lady will feel trapped inside her residence and when she will be able to join the spouses of other leaders at the summit.
