Proudly sporting a traditional Jewish yarmulke atop his head, Trump took a broad step for American history on Monday by becoming the first president in office to pray at the Western Wall. With such a gesture, he acknowledged the Jewish roots of Jerusalem and the importance of the holy territory(video below).
This infamous Jewish landmark has been deemed one of the holiest sites in the world according to the beliefs of Judaism.
After privately praying at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, President Trump and his wife chose to visit the Western Wall. Because of Jewish regulations regarding women’s rights to pray at the Wall, Trump had to separate from his wife as he approached.
Melania Trump and daughter Ivanka prayed and slipped notes into the Wall at the portion set apart for women.
Placing his hand on the Wall, he took the form of common worshippers by praying and slipping a note into its framework.
To avoid political controversy, Prime Minister of Israel Benjamin Netanyahu was restricted from accompanying Mr. Trump on his visit to the Wall. However, the gesture still marks a significant action, as the area is fiercely fought over by Israelis and Palestinians.
