As the country is recovering from a gunman that slaughtered at least 58 people at a Las Vegas concert, Al Green (Dem.-Tex.) said that he is postponing his attempt to impeach President Trump for the time being.
U.S. Representative Al Green had previously made promises to force the matter of impeachment into the White House by as early as this week. On Monday, although, he said will hold off for now while “the nation is in mourning” for the victims of Sunday’s rampage.
In the House chamber as Nevada sent out pleas for blood donations and crisis counselors after the mass shooting that also left more than 500 people wounded, Green said, “Many hearts are bleeding…. There is much suffering. Lives have been lost in a senseless, needless manner in Las Vegas.”
Just last week, Green took a shot at Trump in response to his criticism of NFL players who take a knee during the National Anthem.
Trump asked an Alabama rally crowd, “Wouldn’t you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, to say, ‘Get that son of a bitch off the field right now’? ‘Out, he’s fired. He’s fired.’”
In response, Green said that President Trump “brought discourse to a new low” and exhibited “a level of indecency” unbecoming to the presidency.
Green continued, “There is a right time for all things. This is a time for our nation to mourn and for hearts to heal. Mr. Speaker, I announce that impeachment is postponed.”
Green concluded his thoughts on Twitter, tweeting, “Today on the floor of the Congress of the United States of America, I will call for the Impeachment of the President between 9 am & 10 am CST.”
What are your thoughts? Do you side with Green?
