What do you think about the “First Daughter” taking on a more formal role in President Trump’s White House? Ivanka Trump has an office in the West Wing, and now she is an official unpaid employee of her Father’s administration. The White House said in a recent statement: “We are pleased that Ivanka Trump has chosen to take this step in her unprecedented role as First Daughter and in support of the President. Ivanka’s service as an unpaid employee furthers our commitment to ethics, transparency, and compliance and affords her increased opportunities to lead initiatives driving real policy benefits for the American public that would not have been available to her previously.”
Before this formal position was created, there were concerns raised about the ethics of her proximity and counsel to the president without any formal constraints. Ivanka addressed these concerns in her own statement about the new position: “I have heard the concerns some have with my advising the President in my personal capacity while voluntarily complying with all ethics rules and I will instead serve as an unpaid employee in the White House Office, subject to all of the same rules as other federal employees. Throughout this process, I have been working closely and in good faith with the White House Counsel and my personal counsel to address the unprecedented nature of my role.”
As an Assistant to the President, the First Daughter will join her husband, Jared Kushner, at work each day in the West Wing. Kushner is a very important senior advisor to President Trump. There is some question regarding what “unpaid” will mean. The president said that he would not be paid, but it was later released that he is taking a monthly paycheck and will donate the money to charity at the end of the year. It seems that the government is not set up to accept things of value without compensation.
Ivanka Trump has mostly stayed behind the scenes in these beginning days of her father’s presidency, but that will most likely change with this new formal position. President Trump just recently attended a listening session with women who own small businesses. This event was organized in part by Ivanka. She also is known to have counseled her father to discard a draft of an executive order that would have rolled back protections for LGBT Americans passed under Obama’s tenure.
