Ohio Governor and former candidate for the Republican nomination for president, John Kasich, gave some challenging advice to House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). Kasich said on a CNN live Town Hall alongside Bernie Sanders Tuesday night, “I hope — I saw that Speaker Ryan said some things tonight about getting to the bottom line. Frankly, I think he should be more aggressive. I think he should speak out more, and hopefully, he will.”
Kasich and Sanders were supposed to have a debate/conversation on issues like tax reform and healthcare, but when the Washington Post broke the news on Monday that Trump disclosed highly classified information with two Russian officials during an Oval Office meeting, the agenda of the Town Hall was changed. The moderators and the guest willingly focused on this most recent controversy.
The president has the authority to declassify any information at his discretion, but the issue was whether or not he angered an allied source or even put lives at risk. The New York Times later reported that the origin of the intelligence was Israel. In 2016, Ryan had this to say about anyone who “carelessly” handles classified information, “Individuals who are ‘extremely careless’ with classified information should be denied further access to such info.” This was about James Comey’s statement on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
Ryan issued a statement on Monday saying that he wanted an explanation from the Trump administration as to what the president revealed in the meeting with Russian officials. “We have no way to know what was said, but protecting our nation’s secrets is paramount. The speaker hopes for a full explanation of the facts from the administration,” Ryan’s statement said.
During a press conference today Speaker Ryan said that he wants everyone to remain sober and that three different investigations are going on.
For what it is worth, Kasich weighed in on what is at stake for President Trump. He said that if the report is true, the president is “in bigger trouble than losing his security clearance.”
Do you think that Kasich is right about Ryan being more aggressive?
