For some Liberals and probably even more Moderates, the thought that Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner, by the president’s side is comforting. It is commonly believed that this new Washington power couple is having a positive influence on President Trump, bringing him more toward the center from his far right constituency and administration.
But on the latest, “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver challenged this portrait of Ivanka and Jared and questioned just how “moderating” their influence is. He closed his over 20-minute rant (see the video below) by saying, “If they are the reason you are sleeping at night, you should probably still be awake.”
According to Oliver, Americans should be concerned at the incredible amount of influence this power couple has within the present administration. They both now have offices and positions in the West Wing but have little or no actual political experience. The popular TV host called out Ivanka’s history of publically supporting progressive issues like paid maternity leave and climate change. Oliver reminded his audience that with such influence, the president is defunding Planned Parenthood and limiting the role of science and evidence-based policies in the government. Ivanka brought Al Gore to Trump Tower to meet with her father and discuss climate change. Most Moderates to Liberals saw this as making progress. But it did not seem to have much of an effect; Oliver pointed out, “Unfortunately, just three days later, Trump named climate change denier, Scott Pruitt, to head the EPA. And maybe that’s an example of Ivanka’s moderating influence. Maybe Trump’s initial choice was a guy strangling a dolphin with a six-pack ring.” The “Last Week Tonight” host said in summary, “The assumption that many of us have that she disagrees with him isn’t actually based on much.”
John Oliver saved some of his most stinging remarks for Jared Kushner’s qualifications. He questioned whether his qualifications merited his increasingly stacked White House duties which range from reforming veteran care to brokering peace in the Middle East. Oliver stated that we don’t know very much more about Kushner other than he went to Harvard. He then noted that Kushner apparently didn’t have the SAT or GPA to warrant attending the prestigious school. Oliver commented, “I’m sure it’s nothing to do with the fact his father pledged $2.5 million to the school shortly before he was admitted.”
Oliver denied that he was eviscerating the power couple saying, “I don’t know enough about them to eviscerate them. Just as you don’t know enough about them to justify putting any real hopes in them.” How do you feel about this scathing commentary?
