The mayor of Los Angeles just promised that he would fight back at the Trump administration’s immigration laws despite threats of federal funding cuts from the White House.
According to BuzzFeed, Mayor Eric Garcetti said that Los Angeles would resist the Administration despite the new order released by Attorney General Jeff Sessions. The order demands that cities must notify the Department of Homeland Security at least 48 hours before they let go of any illegal immigrant.
Carcetti told BuzzFeed’s Editor-in-Chief, Ben Smith, that the White House’s laws were making the city worse and they were in violation of the Constitution:
“We will not change what we are doing, and our values are not for sale. This decision was more of the kind of ideological rhetoric that actually makes us less safe… What they’re asking the city to do is in violation of the Constitution.”
The order is likely part of a larger plan in which Sessions hopes eliminates the use of sanctuary cities. Sessions released the following statement about these cities and how they are trying to “undermine” the law:
“So-called sanctuary policies make all of us less safe because they intentionally undermine our laws and protect illegal aliens who have committed crimes… These policies also encourage illegal immigration and even human trafficking by perpetuating the lie that in certain cities, illegal aliens can live outside the law.”
