The GBU-43B Massive Ordnance Air Blast (MOAB) or “mother of all bombs” dropped onto the Islamic state’s Afgh/Pak affiliate known as the “Khorasan Province” in Nangarhar, Afghanistan. The bomb weighs 21,600 pounds compared to the recent Tomahawk missiles used in Syria which were just 1,000 pounds.
The MOAB is so large that it had to be dropped out of a U.S. Air Force C-130 cargo plane. “We kicked it out the back door,” said one U.S. official. President Trump responded that the military action was another “successful mission” which he gave total authorization for.
Gen. John Nicholson, commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, issued the following statement about the attack:
“As [ISIS] losses have mounted, they are using IEDs, bunkers and tunnels to thicken their defense. This is the right munition to reduce these obstacles and maintain the momentum of our offensive against [ISIS].”
The MOAB was created to explode and cause overpressure. This results in collapse of tunnels, caves, and other such structures. The bomb explodes midair created the needed pressure to destroy everything in its path. The original intent was to use the weapon as a first strike blow that would soften the enemy for invasion. There is no indication this will or will not happen.

The attack happened less than a week after US Army Staff Sgt. Mark De Alencar of 7th Special Forces Group was killed. A U.S. defense official told Fox News that the bombing was connected with the soldier’s death:
“It was the right weapon for the right target, and not in retaliation.”
According to Funker530, the bomb can do the following damage:
“Up to 1,000 yards: Obliterates everything.
Up to 1 mile: Knocks people, tents, light buildings, cars and jeeps over within 1-mile radius.
Up to 1.7 miles: shock wave kills people, causes severe damage to buildings, equipment, blows trucks, tanks off road.
Up to 2 miles: causes deafness.
Up to 5 miles: shakes ground, breaks windows.
Up to 30 miles: 10,000 foot high mushroom cloud visible.”
