Let The Games Begin: Who Will Win The Wisconsin Seat?

This has not been the easiest of seasons for House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.). He has had the tough job of trying to unite the Republican Party and defend the president’s actions. But his biggest battle is looming in the future. Randy Bryce, a Democrat, challenging for his seat, has raised more than $430,000 in the first 12 days of his campaign.
What makes this even more significant is the number of donations that were given to add up to this massive amount. 16,000 donations came pouring into his campaign, making the average contribution a little more than $25.
Randy Bryce is a labor activist and ironworker who worked hard for Senator Bernie Sanders campaign during the 2016 presidential election. Bryce launched his campaign for Congress last month. “Just a few weeks into this race, we have seen what can happen when you have the power of working people on your side, and I am excited to work with everyone as we continue this fight through next November,” Bryce said in a statement.
Within 24 hours of declaring his candidacy, Bryce took in more than $100,000. He will have to face off against two other Democrats, political activist David Yankovich and Janesville School Board member Cathy Myers in the Democratic primary in their home district.
It is sure to be a tough battle to represent Wisconsin’s 1st District. House Speaker Ryan has held the seat for almost 20 years and is among the most well-connected and influential Republicans nationwide. And according to precedent, House Speakers are rarely voted out by their constituents. The last time that happened was with Tom Foley (D-Wash.) who lost a bid for reelection in 1994.
Bryce will certainly attempt to capitalize on President Trump’s poor poll numbers. But if recent elections are a sign of what is to come, the Republicans will rally behind their candidates for the win.
Do you think Bryce has a chance of beating Ryan?
