Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin shared with longtime Christian radio host James Dobson that her now public divorce became news to her via an email from estranged husband Todd Palin’s attorney.
The pair, who were married and made it through just over 31 years and multiple political campaigns as well as a special needs child, before officially filing for divorce just months ago, according to The Hill.
Palin told Dobson that she received an email on June 19, her husband’s birthday, stating that he wanted a divorce.
“It was devastating,” Palin said in the interview. “I thought I got shot.”
Todd Palin filed in September of this year and cited an “incompatibility of temperament between the parties such that they find it impossible to live together as husband and wife.”
While Todd Palin’s representative did not immediately respond to The Hill’s request for comment on the issue, Sarah Palin told Dobson that “it’s not over yet” saying that the couple is in counseling.
“Attorneys are getting rich off of us and I don’t like that whole system,” she sad. “It makes no sense to me. But yeah, the prayer would be for, of course, for God’s will to be done, but that God would make sure that we know that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side and …”
And “it still has to be mowed,” Dobson interjected, according to The Hill.
“And it still has to be mowed,” she said.
As a former mayor, Palin has officiated several weddings, including one in an aisle at Walmart, which she noted to the talk show host.
“That’s so Alaska for you,” she joked. “But what I was always preaching to the bride and the groom was that three cord strand. You, your spouse, God in the middle, and as you grew closer to God, you would just naturally grow closer together. I’ve always preached that to my kids, too, so they knowing that that is … That’s the way it’s supposed to work.”
The pair were reportedly asking for the disillusionment of their marriage and filing for joint custody of their minor child.
