California Democratic Representative Maxine Waters announced that one of her first actions as chair of a House committee will be to take aim at White House Chief of Staff Mick Mulvaney.
“The time for accountability for his actions is about to begin,” Waters said Wednesday at an event hosted by the Center for American Progress, a progressive think tank.
Waters is the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee following the Democrats taking control of the House of Representatives after the 2018 midterm elections.
The Representative has been a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, often championing the call for impeachment. According to The Daily Caller, Waters plans to hold hearings for White House officials, specifically targeting the banking industry.
“The California Democrat has taken issue with Mulvaney’s tenure as the interim director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), an agency he lead from November 2017 to December 2018. Waters suggested he tried to dismantle the CFPB by rolling back fair housing safeguards and protections for consumers, The Daily Caller reported.
“It is a new day in Congress and for the Financial Services Committee,” Waters said.
The California Democrat added that her committee will attempt to undo the rollbacks.
Waters, along with other top Democrats plan to target the Trump administration during their tenure in office, and hold investigations.
Intelligence Committee Chair Adam Schiff announced that his and every House committee will focus on investigating the White House.
Waters and other committee chairs will have subpoena power, but the GOP controlled Senate will prohibit them from complete control over legislative reform.
Waters has in the past “guaranteed” that the president was “in collusion with the Russians to undermine our democracy” despite the lack of findings from the ongoing investigation into the 2016 presidential election.
For his part, the president has pushed back against Waters, even insinuating that she suffers from mental deficits, going so far as to say that Waters is “a very low IQ individual”.
