Meet ‘The Most Hated Man in America,’ In Politics That Is

It was the lead story in most Wednesday morning news shows, and one of the players in the special congressional election in Pennsylvania joked that he is expected to be “the most hated man in America.”

He is neither the Republican candidate, Rick Saccone, or the Democratic candidate, Conor Lamb. He’s the Libertarian candidate, Drew Gray Miller, and the votes he earned contributed to the race being too close to call late Tuesday night.

By 10:38 pm, Miller tweeted: “We’re only a few hours away from me being the most hated man in America.”

By 11:30 pm, and with 99 percent of the precincts reporting in PA’s 18th Congressional District, the margin between the two leading candidates was just 847 votes. Miller’s count was 1,351 votes, according to the New York Times. And the Associated Press ruled that it could not declare a winner because the race was too close to call.

The results would have to be determined early Wednesday morning after absentee ballots in Washington County, PA was counted.

Miller told ABC News that the intense race was “exactly the outcome” he wanted because it would send a message that every vote matters.

Adam Kelsey tweeted: “Just got off the phone with Drew Miller, the third-party candidate in #PA18, he says this is “exactly the outcome [he] wanted.”

And he followed with: “Miller said that he believes the margin here sends the message that every vote counts and that he’s extremely proud to be the first third-party candidate in the district in decades.”

Wednesday morning, some media outlets were already declaring a Democratic upset in a district that Trump won by almost 20 points in the 2016 election.

Is this a sign of what is coming in the midterm elections?
