If you’re an American planning a trip to Mexico, you better leave quick. A recent statement released by a Mexican official has stated that the country is looking into making Americans pay to enter their country. This apparently comes as a retaliation to President Trump’s insistence to build the border wall.
Foreign Secretary, Luis Videgaray, recently called on the executive staff to add an entry fee after he described Trump’s wall an “unfriendly, hostile” act:
“We could explore — not necessarily a visa, that could impede a lot of people from coming to Mexico — but we could perhaps (have) a fee associated with entry. This is something that I’m sure will be part of our discussion, and I believe we can find points of agreement.”
Videgaray also noted that the country is still unwilling to pay for the border wall. He continued saying if Mexico and the United States couldn’t come up with a fair agreement, the Mexican government would press into reducing security:
“If the negotiation or other themes – immigration, the border, trade – isn’t satisfactory to Mexico’s interests, we will have to review our existing cooperation. This would be especially in the security areas…and that involves the national immigration agency, the federal police and of course, the armed forces.”
Despite the pushback from Mexico, Trump was still pushing to get Congress’ approval for a down payment on the wall. Unfortunately, Trump received enough backlash from both sides to decide to wait until September to revisit the issue. Until then, Trump plans to continue his campaign promise that Mexico will pay for the wall.
