The Statue of Liberty mysteriously went dark on Tuesday night leading many people to wonder just what happened. Everything was turned off save the iconic torch.
Lady Liberty remained in the dark for roughly an hour at 11 pm and baffled even authorities who should have known something. National Park Service members had no idea why the lights went off and a spokesman from the Statue of Liberty National Monument tweeted the following:
“Some lights on the Statue were temporarily off tonight.”
It would seem that they didn’t have any idea of the cause either. The blackout’s origin is still unidentified, but it may have been due to an emergency generator project as part of Hurricane Sandy recovery. Officials plan to return to Lady Liberty to investigate further.
Although the generator is a valid theory, a twitter account for the Women’s Mach movement had a theory of their own. The group believes that the outage was symbolizing Wednesday’s “Day Without a Women,” which is meant to encourage women to skip work and wear red.
While we aren’t ones to speculate, the ladder theory makes since. However, if someone has access to shut down the lights without anyone knowing, doesn’t that sound like a security issue? Let us know what you think about this weird incident. Do you think someone’s trying to make a statement for American women?
