A former Republican congressman from Florida thinks that America might be better off if Democrats retake the House in 2018. Former Rep. David Jolly (R-Fla.) said during an interview on MSNBC on Monday, “I, personally, as a Republican, in the past few weeks have wondered, ‘Is the republic safer if Democrats take over the House in 2018?'”
Jolly said he even raised that issue with a leading GOP politician last week in Washington, D.C. “And the remarkable thing is he had been thinking exactly the same thing,” Jolly said. “This is a president that needs a greater check on his power than Republicans in Congress have offered.”
The former representative was asked further whether other Republicans agree that Democrats should be in control of the Congress. Jolly said, “There is no discernible Republican ideological agenda that is worth fighting for right now. But we do know that we have a president who very well might put this nation at risk and this Republican Congress has done nothing to check his power. Democrats could and we might be better off as a republic if they take the House in 2018.”
These highly charged words came just hours after the president appeared in a Rose Garden press conference with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). Trump insisted the two have a good relationship, despite the president’s recent attacks against McConnell. The Kentucky senator said Monday he and Trump have the same agenda and have been “friends and acquaintances for a long time.”
The president and GOP leadership are now pushing to get tax reform done before the end of the year. Previously, they failed to repeal and replace Obamacare.
Jolly’s words seem to go along with Sen. Bob Corker’s warning earlier this month that Trump’s actions could put the country on the path to World War III.
Do you think Jolly is right? Do you believe that a number of Republicans think America would be better off if the Democrats win back the House in 2018?
