Donald Trump isn’t the only Trump to make headlines this week for standing up to injustice. The First Lady, Melania Trump, just went toe to toe with The Daily Mail, a British tabloid. The news agency in London recently issued an apology to the first lady and agreed to pay $2.9 million and costs settling two lawsuits for publishing an “untrue” article about Melania. They alleged “racy” rumors concerning her years as a single model in New York. The headline read: “Racy photos and troubling questions about his wife’s past that could derail Trump.”
The Daily Mail wrote, “We apologize to Mrs. Trump for any distress that our publication caused her.” They also retracted false statements saying that Melania Trump “provided services beyond simply modeling.” The apology also reported that there was no evidence to support their allegations and it included Melania Trump’s denial of such claims.
The attorney’s for the First Lady argued that the articles damaged her ability to build businesses with the reputation of a “successful businesswoman.” Melania sued the tabloid in a British court and the New York counterpart, Mail Online. Trump’s California lawyer, Charles Harder, emailed a statement in which he praised the settlement and declared that the Daily Mail issued a “full and complete retraction and apology for its false statements about her, and agreed to pay her million of dollars in damages and full reimbursement of her legal fees costs. Mrs. Trump will remain vigilant to protect her good name and reputation from those who make false and defamatory statements about her.”
A person who was familiar with the settlement spoke to the Associated Press with anonymity and disclosed that the total amount of the settlement for both the U.S. and U.K. lawsuits was about $2.9 million.
This past February, the First Lady settled another defamation lawsuit against a Maryland blogger who apologized for an article in which he reported on rumors about Melania’s past and that she suffered a nervous breakdown after her speech at the Republican National Convention. The First Lady has proven her ability to take a stand, just like her husband.
