An illegal immigrant has recently been sentenced to eight years in prison after she illegally voted in the 2012 and 2014 elections.
Rosa Maria Ortega, a 37-year-old Mexican citizen, was recently charged with two counts of illegal voting after officials found that she had voted a minimum of five times in several cities of Texas. After lying to the court about being a U.S. citizen, the jury sentenced her to eight years in prison accompanied with a $5,000 fine.
Fox 4 News reported that she was first recognized after she attempted to register to vote in Tarrant County twice. She was denied both times. After managing to vote five times, Dallas finally canceled her registration.
The New York Times reported that Ortega was originally brought to America by her mother as an infant. Not long after, her mother was deported and Ortega became a permanent resident. In her court hearing, Ortega said she didn’t understand the difference between being a citizen and a legal resident. Considering she didn’t have much education, this could be the truth:
“My mom just used us to get stamps. She never gave us love or guidance. She got deported,” Fox 4 reported Ortega saying. “All my life since I worked, I always on my knowledge thought I was a U.S. citizen because I never knew the difference of U.S. citizen and U.S. resident. And the point is if I knew, everything would’ve been the correct way.”
However, the Dallas News reported that prosecutors showed that Ortega checked a box on her driver’s license indicating she was not a citizen, then the election administrator said she filled out a voter application and check the box saying she was a citizen.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton commented on the matter saying:
“This case shows how serious Texas is about keeping its elections secure, and the outcome sends a message that violators of the state’s election law will be prosecuted to the fullest.”
President Trump has been actively attacking voter fraud since his claim that he would have won the popular vote if it hadn’t been for some many illegal votes. Ortega’s case is just another example proving Trump right. As for Ortega, she will most likely finish her 8 years and then be deported back to Mexico.
