President Trump is not afraid to take a stand and make things happen regardless how he looks politically. He is now threatening to withhold ObamaCare payments as a way to force Democrats to the healthcare negotiating table, according to The Wall Street Journal.
The Journal reported that Trump made this healthcare threat in an interview on Wednesday. “I don’t want people to get hurt,” Trump said. “What I think should happen — and will happen — is the Democrats will start calling me and negotiating.” If Trump follows through on this “healthscare,” he would then use the chaos not making the payments would bring to the insurance markets to ensure the Democrats make a deal on repealing the present law. Senate Democratic Leader Charles Schumer (N.Y.) said in response to the comments that “President Trump is threatening to hold hostage health care for millions of Americans, many of whom voted for him, to achieve a political goal of repeal that would take health care away from millions more. This cynical strategy will fail,” Schumer continued. “Our position remains unchanged: drop repeal, stop undermining our health care system, and we will certainly sit down and talk about ways to improve the Affordable Care Act.”
President Trump has not been clear on exactly what he will do regarding the healthcare payments known as cost-sharing reductions (CSRs). Trump acknowledged that he might not want to be blamed for bringing chaos to the system saying, “That’s part of the reason that I may go the other way. The longer I’m behind this desk, and you have ObamaCare, the more I would own it,” he said.
The CSRs reimburse insurers for the discounts they give in deductibles to low-income ObamaCare enrollees. The House Republicans have sued because of these payments arguing that they are unconstitutional. The lawsuit is presently in process, but the Trump administration could just cancel the payments altogether. The insurance companies are pushing for more certainty as they try to plan ahead regarding whether or not they will even participate in ObamaCare next year. The insurance companies may use the confusion to hike premiums or just drop out of the market altogether.
