The probe into the “unmasking” of American citizens under the Obama administration is not just focused on Susan Rice anymore. The number of people thought to be involved expanding according to a source close to the House Intelligence Committee’s review.
This source told Fox News that the record suggests the unmasking “goes beyond” key officials like former National Security Adviser Susan Rice, former CIA Director John Brennan and former U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Powers. In fact, there are more than a half-dozen former senior Obama administration officials that are now of interest to House committee investigators.
The CIA, FBI, and NSA have now fully complied with Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) subpoenas that were issued in May concerning the “unmasking” of associates of President Trump during his campaign. Although Susan Rice has pulled out of her planned testimony on Tuesday, those involved in the “unmasking” is expected to be a central focus in her eventual testimony.
A source said that some of the unmaskings might very well be routine, but other requests for information on particular American citizens seem to be “unwarranted” and requires “more explanation.” Investigators are still only at the beginning of their assessment, and it is unclear whether any official violated the law or internal regulations.
Rice, at first, told PBS that she “knew nothing” about Trump associate unmasking, but then in April, she acknowledged she asked for the identities of U.S. citizens in intelligence reports. She defended those requests as routine and denied leaking any Trump-related information. “I leaked nothing to nobody, and never have,” she told MSNBC.
What are your thoughts about this growing investigation and the number of people that may have been involved? Do you think Rice is in legal trouble? Will this eventually lead to any wrongdoing from Obama?
