White House senior adviser, Jared Kushner, has been asked by the President to head a new office designed to overhaul the United States government.
The statement, issued in Trump’s name, addressed the need for the new position:
“All Americans, regardless of their political views, can recognize that government stagnation has hindered our ability to properly function, often creating widespread congestion and leading to cost overruns and delays. I promised the American people I would produce results, and apply my ‘ahead of schedule, under budget’ mentality to the government.”
The office is believed to be titled, “White House Office of American Innovation” according to the original reporting by The Washington Post. The post also reported that Stephen Bannon, the controversial chief strategist, would NOT have a role in the new office. The reason why has not been revealed at this time.
Kushner interviewed with the Washington Post on Sunday stating:
“We should have excellence in government. The government should run like a great American company. Our hope is that we can achieve successes and efficiencies for our customers, who are citizens.”
Kushner, whose married to President Trump’s daughter, has been a pivotal role in President Trump’s administration and even more so during the Trump campaign. Trump apparently trusts family, and with Kushner’s history as a successful real estate developer, it’s no surprise that Trump placed him as the head of the office.
According to NBC News, Kushner has been extremely careful not to go “afoul” with his transition:
“Kushner divested himself of many of his businesses and worked closely with the Office of Government Ethics to ensure that he wouldn’t run afoul of federal ethics regulations, according to emails obtained last month by MSNBC.”
Although federal anti-nepotism laws state that family members cannot hold government positions, Trump managed to get “special hiring authority” to bring on Kushner to the West Wing. The Justice department’s Office of Legal Counsel verified that bringing Kushner in was legal because of that “special hiring authority.”
