Although it seems hilarious to most of the right wing crowd, New York City’s Mayor, Bill de Blasio, recently stated that it is “distressing” that illegal immigrants who are non-criminals are being arrested. He may be stating “non-criminal” because it is only a civil offense to be an illegal immigrant. The comments were made during the #Askthemayor segment on WNYC and you can click below to listen:
Immigration and Customs Enforcement released a statement on Wednesday stating they had arrested 41,318 illegal immigrants in the first few months of the Trump administration. Of those immigrants, 10,800 were considered to be non-criminals. De Blasio’s statement speaks largely of the 156 non-criminal illegal immigrants that were arrested in New York City:
“It’s very distressing, Brian, to hear that ICE is picking up people who are law abiding and contributing to the community. That’s only going to undermine the relationship between our immigrants and our police and our government in general. That’s not going to make anyone safe.”
The numbers for arresting non-criminals have more than doubled since last year. This is probably due to the President’s strict ruling on illegal immigration. Since the beginning of his campaign, Trump has fought with cities like New York City. Recently, the Department of Justice claimed that New York City was “soft on crime” which set de Blasio on fire. His only response to Attorney General Jeff sessions was to say that to a police officer’s face.
What do you think about all the non-criminals being arrested? Do you think that’s fair? Let us know in the comments below!
