Nike has plenty of power behind their corporation, which will come in handy after their next product release.
The worldwide company plans to come out with a performance hijab for Muslim athletes. While there is nothing wrong with accommodating someone of another religion, there is no doubt that this will cause a stir.
The product, known as the “Nike Pro-Hijab,” is created from a single-layer pull-on design. Along with a lightweight polyester, the Hijab also comes with tiny holes allowing for breathability. The product will come in dark and neutral colors but will keep it s opaque requirement.
According to CNN Money, the creation process has taken over 13 months and was started after several Muslim athletes complained about their traditional hijabs. Nike issued a statement saying the Hijab was already being worn by professional Emirati figure skater Zahra Lari. Lari issued a statement on the Hijab saying:
“I was thrilled and a bit emotional to see Nike prototyping a Hijab. I’ve tried so many different hijabs for performance, and … so few of them actually work for me. But once I put it on and took it for a spin on the ice, I was blown away by the fit and the light weight.”
Lari isn’t the first female athlete to deal with this issue, but hopefully, she will be one of the last.
