Hurricane Maria ravaged Puerto Rico. The island remains without power and is expected to for months. Large portions of the island are now unable to sustain human life. Countless Puerto Ricans have been left without homes, food, or clean water. Pharmacies are running out of medication and hospitals are only able to provide triage level care.

In the wake of the devastation, President Trump came under fire for his twitter interest in the National Football League while the US territory is dealing with the humanitarian crisis. The President responded on Wednesday.

President Trump Commends Relief Efforts

The President praised the various federal agencies involved in the relief effort on Wednesday. He specifically praised the efforts of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

The President who is often criticized for his twitter posts, took to Twitter today to offer praise and encouragement for those who are suffering and also for those who have gone to Puerto Rico to aid in relief efforts.

FEMA has been partnering with Puerto Rican Governor Ricardo Rossello and also Department of Defense emergency response teams in an effort to bring relief to the suffering island.

The Coverage

The President is often the subject of criticism from the press. In response to the news coverage that called on the him to do more for Puerto Rico, and accused him of ignoring the crisis and focusing on football, the President also defended himself.

He said that he wishes the “press would treat him fairly” but focused his attention on the relief efforts in Puerto Rico. It is expected that many Puerto Ricans may seek refuge in the United States as life is no longer sustainable on the island. Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory, and residents of the island can travel between the mainland and the island.
