The latest U.S./Russian conflict happened in the sky just 100 miles from American land. Two Russian nuclear-capable bombers flew near Kodiak Island, Alaska on Monday night. This is the first time since President Trump took office that Moscow has sent bombers so close to U.S. soil. The Tu-95 “Bear” bombers flew about 280 miles southwest of Elmendorf Air Force Base, well within the Air Defense Identification Zone of the United States.
The U.S. response was swift, they scrambled two F-22 stealth fighter jets and an E-3 airborne early warning plane to intercept the Russian bombers. The American jets flew side by side with the Russian bombers for 12 minutes before the Russian pilots reversed their course and headed back to their own base in eastern Russia.
This added fuel to the already burning fire regarding our present relationship with the Russian government. Last week, Rex Tillerson, Secretary of State, said that U.S./Russian relations were at a “low point” while sitting next to Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov. President Trump repeated that claim in a recent interview. While Tillerson was in Moscow, the Russians flew three bombers near the east coast of Japan forcing the Japanese military to scramble 14 fighter jets to intercept the bombers. They also released a Russian spy plane along Japan’s west coast.
We have not had an incident like this with Russia since July 4th, 2015. Russia flew a pair of bombers off the coasts of Alaska and California, coming within 40 miles of the Californian coast. While the bombers cruised just west of Mendocino, California, Russian President Vladimir Putin called then President Barack Obama to wish him a happy Independence Day.
It seems that the talk about collusion between Trump and Putin can be put to rest. The Russian government has been and continues to be a grave threat to our country. Or, do you still think that it is possible that all of this “conflict” is a ruse to throw off reports of the present administrations working together? We would like to read your comments.
